The opinion of an operator of a wholesale market

A slowdown in the sale of oranges in the past few days

It could be because the temperatures are higher than normal, or it could be because we are at the end of the month, in any case the wholesaler Daniele Di Mauro has been experiencing a slowdown in the sale of oranges for ten days. "Up to 20 January we worked well, with prices that were more than fair and requests were sustained. From then on, however, sales have slowed down and prices have also slightly decreased".

The wholesaler, who operates at the Cesena Wholesale Market, says that before the average price was between 0.70 and 1.30 euros/kg. Now it has gone down to 0.60-1 euro/kg. "And this is despite the fact that the quality is excellent and there are no problems in terms of taste or ripeness".

It goes a little better for organic oranges, which have never fallen below 0.90 euros/kg, with peaks well above that, depending on the calibres. "The quality of the Tarocco is really excellent - says the wholesaler - with epidermis with its characteristic red facets, and the color of the pulp optimal as well. I hope that the situation will unlock quickly".

The situation with organic lemons is different, another article that the company has been dealing with for some time and with which it has considerable experience. Prices are good and demand is constant.

"From Sicily to Emilia Romagna, within 48 hours oranges go from the trees to the market. All this guarantees organoleptic quality. The manufacturing companies we work with are able to collect, calibrate, select and package the product within a few hours".

"In general, however, I am not complaining - concludes the wholesaler - because we are able to work well and the customers appreciate the quality of our products and of our way of operating. The markets are experiencing some bad moments and we should work in such a way to attract buyers by facilitating them as much as possible and providing them with services".
