The juice industry, a solution for the stone fruit surplus in Spain

Recently, representatives of the national organization Cooperativas Agro-Alimentarias of Spain and of the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Murcia (Fecoam) visited the facilities of the Murcian company Juver, integrated in the Grupo Conserve Italia and specialized in the production of juices and other products made from fruit. The aim is to collaborate with the firm and start supplying "top quality stone fruit as of March," said Pascual Hortelano, representative of the stone fruit sector at Fecoam.

Reusing issues
Hortelano says that the reuse of fruit that has no place in the market, whether due to small damages or to oversupply, is one of the sector's biggest problems. "There are no effective mechanisms to reuse fruit that, due to excessive ripening or an inadequate caliber, does not go on sale and stays in the distribution center," said the representative.

"Companies devoted to the production of juices and preserves that use large quantities of fresh fruit have disappeared in recent years." Therefore, this new form of collaboration with the processing industry is very important for fruit cooperatives in the Region of Murcia.

Other options that the sector is considering to boost the consumption of sweet fruits are the launch of a nationwide promotional campaign and the creation of an interprofessional organization.
