"The Sino-US trade war does not have a big impact on the export of fresh Chinese pears"

"The export price of Chinese pears gradually dropped in the last few years because market competition has become more intense. The changing relation between supply and demand put further pressure on the price. Our export price is around 10 USD per box (of 17 kg)," said Gary of Shijiazhuang Xingguan Import & Export Trading Co., Ltd.

"Our company grows and sells a large variety of fresh pears. The sales season of fresh pears begins every year in July and continues until October. Fruit in storage can be kept fresh until the middle of the subsequent year. Southeast Asia is currently our main overseas market. The pear varieties we export to Southeast Asia include Ya, Imperial Crown, and Xiaosu pears. We export several hundred shipping containers per year. Pears are mid-end market products in Southeast Asia and the market price is quite reasonable. Although Southeast Asian countries are famous for their abundance of tropical fruits, there is only a limited market supply of fruits from the temperate north, such as pears. Fresh pears from China therefore have an advantage in the Southeast Asian market and they are quite popular with Southeast Asian consumers."

When asked about the impact of the Sino-US trade war on pear export, Gary replied, "the trade war does not have a major impact on our business. First, the cost price of pears is quite low. Even with the additional custom tariffs the market price is still affordable for most US consumers. As long as the product quality is good, US importers will continue to purchase our pears." Gary also talked about plans for pear export to the Brazilian market. "We applied for permission, but because there is a limit on the number of people allowed to export pears to Brazil, we were unable to obtain permission immediately. However, we think the market potential of Chinese pears in South America is huge and we will continue to keep an eye on this market."

Shijiazhuang Xingguan Import and Export Trading will participate in the Berlin Fruit Logistica on February 5-7. Visitors are welcome at their company stand in hall 26 at booth D-04g. "We have been regular participants in the Berlin Fruit Logistica for many years now. In previous years we often renewed contacts with our clients in Southeast Asia. This year we also hope to meet new contacts in the European and US markets. We would like to expand our activities in the international market."
