Spanish exports of fresh fruits and vegetables to non-EU countries between January and October 2019 amounted to 762,699 tons and 855 million euro, i.e. 28% and 22% more in volume and value than in the same period of the previous year. Exports to non-EU countries accounted for 7% of the total exported and 8% of the value achieved.
The non-EU countries can be divided into two groups: non-EU European countries, to which Spain exported 258,880 tons (+13%) for 333 million euro (+12%) and which were led by Switzerland and Norway; and non-European countries, to which Spain exported 512,779 tons (+36%) worth 522 million euro (+30%). Sales to the EU increased to 10.7 million tons (+9%) and 10,857 million euro (+5%).
The remarkable growth of non-EU exports has been due to the increase in purchases from Switzerland, Spain's fruits and vegetables leading non-EU market destination. Switzerland purchased 138,209 tons (+13%) for a value of 208 million euro (+15%), reinforcing the importance of the European market for the Spanish sector. In addition, sales to certain third countries, especially Brazil and Canada, also increased, according to FEPEX. Exports to Brazil in the analyzed period increased to 92,148 tons (+66%) and 84.7 million euro (+53%). Meanwhile, exports to Canada totaled 57,138 tons (+18%) worth 59.4 million euro (+7%).
