Rain and snow in north China is bad for conditions in banana production areas

The conditions in banana production areas recently weakened. The supply volume from Guangxi production areas is relatively small. They are approaching the end of their season. The price of bananas in Nanning, Chongzuo, and Hepu, all in Guangxi, recently dropped. Bananas from Guangdong have to compete with Shatang oranges. Production areas in Yangjiang, Foshan, and Huizhou, all in Guangdong, suffered from this competition. Yunnan suffered from rain and snow in the north. The price of bananas in Jinghong, Hekou, Wenshan, Dehong, and Lincang, all in Yunnan, also dropped. Market conditions in Laos and Myanmar also weakened.

The banana price in Yunnan is fluctuating, but shows an overall downward trend. Banana supply to end-markets in the north is slowing down because of rain and snow in north China. As a result, the banana prices in Jinghong and Hekou are falling. The temperature in Wenshan is relatively warm and the bananas grow quick. Farmers are therefore desperate to sell their bananas. As a result, the price is falling. In general, when temperatures in production areas are rising, the production speed quickens, but when north China suffers from snow, the transportation cost goes up. Furthermore, bananas have to compete with seasonal fruits, which further weakens their market position.
