Some French asparagus will be available next week

“There will always be room for early asparagus on the market”

Aspa2, a French asparagus producer, will start selling white asparagus next week. They are cultivated using an underground heating network. The heating method used does not emit greenhouse gases. This year, the volumes will be slightly higher than in previous years. “We increased our greenhouse area,” explains Jacques Guironnet, manager of the company. According to him, there is an increasing demand for early asparagus. “Besides our existing clients, some new French, European and Asian clients also contacted us.”

The heating and the production, partially in greenhouses, allow Aspa2 to offer asparagus of constant quality. “Quality is our primary objective. This truly is a high-end product mostly intended for gastronomy. The vegetation was very beautiful in 2019, and we are expecting to meet our goals in terms of quantity and quality for this campaign.”

The Aspa2 asparagus are among the earliest in Europe. “For most people, the asparagus season starts around the end of March. But there is room for our products on the market. Some consumers familiar with our products question professionals in the stores to know when our asparagus will arrive. Our products are not off-season, they are just early.” The Aspa2 asparagus campaign will last until mid-April. This year, the company hopes to be on the market for Easter.

The asparagus is exported to other European countries and Asia. In France, they go through Rungis where they are sold directly to supermarket chains. Recently, Aspa2 diversified its packaging. The asparagus are now available in packs of 5kg or 2kg, and in bundles.

Aspa2 will be present at Fruit Logistica to present its asparagus. Hall 22, Booth C-07a.
