Exporter Guide Canada from USDA

Frozen vegetables and fruit growing market in Canada

With a turnover of 16 billion dollars (14.31 billion Euros), Canada was the largest market for agricultural products from the US in 2018,
of which 3.4 billion dollars ( 3.04 billion Euros) was for fruit and vegetables, according to Canada's Exporter Guide USDA (United States Department of Agriculture). However, the free trade agreement with the European Union (CETA) also offers opportunities for Dutch growers to export to Canada. The USDA report with information about import rules for agricultural products can help.

Imports of onions grew by 20% in 2018, potatoes and peppers by 9%, cucumbers by 8%, grapefruit and tomatoes by 6%.

The Canadian retail business is dominated by five large supermarkets:

Loblaws
Sobeys
Subway
Walmart
Costco

In addition, there are more than 7,000 independent retailers with many opportunities for new products. The sale of frozen fruit and vegetables ranks number 8 on the list of growth markets.
