Leon van den Hombergh, Frankort&Koning:

"Seamless transition between Brazilian and Central American melon supply"

"At the moment the weather conditions in the production areas of Brazil, Panama, Honduras and Costa Rica are fine for the melon cultivation there," according to Leon van den Hombergh of Frankort & Koning. "The melon fields look good. We expect good quality from Central America following the end of the Brazil season."

The sizes certainly won't be small and will have good flavour and brix values. Our Central American season will kick off with Galia and Canteloupe from Honduras. The other Central American countries will soon follow," says Leon.

Cultivation in Honduras

"The demand for melons is always much stronger than normal in the holidays and the relatively mild weather in Europe also helps. But melons are also increasingly known as a vitamin rich and low calorie start to the new year, so we see more retailers placing the melon in the spot light in January," expects Leon.
