Taiwan has recently authorized Honduran melon imports to its market. This fruit continues to gain access to the Asian market, strengthening Honduras exports for the 2019/2020 season. The general director of the National Agricultural food Health and Safety Service (Senasa), Juan Ramon Velasquez, stated that Honduras had been officially notified of the news by the representation of Taiwan in the country.
The authorization to export melon to the Asian country was achieved after the National Phytosanitary Protection Agency of Taiwan carried out several inspections of the Santa Rosa and Montelíbano farms to verify the Phytosanitary Certification System led by Senasa, which establishes compliance with the work plan for the export of melon from the production sites that are free of the Mediterranean fly.
The melons produced in the areas that are free of this pest are exported to more than 53 countries. Honduras exports more than 37,000 containers of melon a year.
Melon and watermelon exports up until October 2019 increased by 39.3 million dollars and amounted to 111.7 million. Exports were mainly sent to the United States and the Netherlands. These sales are already 35.7 million dollars higher than all of the sales achieved in 2018 when melon and watermelon exports amounted generated 76 million.
