First shipment of Ecuador goldenberry heads for US

On December 12, 2019 the first export of fresh goldenberries to the United States, took place. It departed from Shungourko production and processing center of Andean and Tropical fruits, located in Machachi. After 14 years of negotiation, the company Golden Sweet Spirit will realize this dream on behalf of Ecuador. The result of coordinated work between the public and private sector, materialized on November 5, 2019, when the US Government passed the authorization to import Goldenberry from Ecuador. Approximately 3,500 kilograms of Ecuadorian goldenberry will travel to New York, Los Angeles and Miami.

14 years have passed since the first request for entry for the Ecuadorian goldenberry to the United States market was made. The path taken was the establishment of free zones with low prevalence of
fruit fly (monitoring systems that take years to establish and must have constant monitoring). The result will be reflected in an increase in sales of high quality goldenberry to this new market and the important entry of foreign exchange into the country. This allows small producers to generate rural enterprises and reach resources in their communities and be a tool to improve their standard of living at more than 3000 thousand meters.

The Goldenberry, is an Andean fruit, with a high amount of nutrients, high in antioxidants, vitamin A and C. Its secondary metabolites help prevent degenerative diseases, cancer, diabetes and many others. It is also a product that fits perfectly into concepts of family farming and circular economies, as it helps mitigate global warming, as it is a native plant and is produced under highest sustainability standards. The Ecuadorian Goldenberry aims to establish itself in the US market.
