Aziz Mataoui from Contec

"High expectations from growers but nobody supports them"

Extreme weather events are increasingly frequent and this is why fruit producers are getting organized to protect their orchards. Contect commercial director Aziz Mateoui is travelling the world to promote pre-compressed concrete poles and the benefits of professional protection systems.

"When I meet people around the world I always think that growers work for all of us, they produce food in compliance with a myriad of regulations and laws. Yet, despite all their efforts and investments, the products are always paid too little. We expect a lot from growers, but are never willing to acknowledge their worth."

"Ten years ago, I would have never imagined having to protect citrus fruit. Nowadays, in Florida and South Africa, there are thousands of protected hectares because extreme weather events are increasingly common. We have to deal with hail, wind, insects, heavy rain and scalding. A protection system must be designed to provide total protection."

Contec attends numerous trade fairs to promote pre-compressed concrete poles. Meeting people in person is the only way to best describe how they work.

Contec manufactures the technology needed to build pre-compressed concrete poles. "It is unthinkable to have unprotected orchards and poles are the key element for any net system - whether it needs to protect against hail, rain and/or insects. Pre-compressed concrete poles are the most stable, efficient, adaptable and long-lasting," explains founder Fabrizio Raccanello.

"We cannot tackle nature, but we can prevent the biggest problems caused by it. We need to raise awareness and make sure politics does not abandon growers. Growers, researchers and politicians must work together to work out shared strategies," concludes Mataoui.
