After opening the Chinese market for Colombian Hass avocado in July 2019, the South American country shipped out the first three containers of this fruit to China in record time. The fruit shipped was produced in the regions of Antioquia, Risaralda, and Valle del Cauca.
The delegates of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will visit the departments of Antioquia and Valle del Cauca to tour the Avofruit, Pacific Fruit, and Westfalia Fruit Colombia companies, which are getting ready to export Hass avocado to the Chinese market They will also visit a production area (Huerto Alto Bonito) in the department of Risaralda.
China is an important market for this avocado variety. According to official figures, China was the ninth largest importer of avocado in 2018, with a total of 43,859 tons worth $133 million dollars.
Colombia has more than 20,000 hectares of Hass avocado, and its production reaches 149,000 tons. The main producing areas are Tolima, Antioquia, and Caldas. There are 15,000 producers of avocado in the country in 22,000 production units, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Colombian Hass avocado exports between January and September 2019 totaled 71 million dollars, i.e. 45.5% more than in the same period of 2018. In volume, the country exported 35,700 tons, that is, 58% more than the 22,450 tons it exported in the same period of 2018.
