A ship from Madagascar will arrive at the end of next week with lychees at the Belgian New Fruit Wharf (BNFW) in Zeebrugge. "Last year, two vessels with lychees from Madagascar had to unload with us due to the protests by the yellow jackets in France. This year it's back to the normal volume and one ship, "says Johan Claes of the Belgian New Fruit Wharf.
''Every year there are two reefer ships arriving with lychees from Madagascar in Europe. The lychees destined for the Northern European market arrive in Zeebrugge and the lychees for the Southern European market arrive in the port of Sète in the south of France," says Johan. "The ship will be unloaded from both below and the upper deck containers during next week and we will store the lychees, and after they will go to customers. The volume of lychees coming from Madagascar has been stable for years, the ships are completely full, there is no space to spare, so nothing else can be added. "
Three deep sea container connections
"In next year we will have three deep-sea container connections with South America with direct routes to BNFW docks at Belgian New Fruit Wharf/ Belfruco in Antwerp. This is a major step forward for us. We get two direct routes from Maersk / Hamburg Süd and a special short sea connection for reefers from CMA CGM that connects us directly with South America. Because the containers will be unloaded immediately next to the cold store, the containers will not need any additional transport from the container terminal to the storage location, which is an important time and money saving," concludes Claes.
