The prices on the chicory market have been at a good level for several weeks. "We are in the transition from the old to the new roots, with the old ones losing production and the new ones not yet in full production, thus ensuring a limited supply," says Sjan van Gorsel of chicory packer Reijnpack from Sint-Philipsland, The Netherlands.
"All in all, it is pretty scrappy to get the requested offers together. This is currently resulting in day prices at the Belgian and Dutch auctions between 1.50 and 2 euros," says Sjan. He expects that the prices will continue that way for a while. "The production is not sufficient. The demand is always good in the winter months." "The supply is also low in France, so we are not troubled by that at the moment. We supply chicory mainly to the Italian, German and Eastern European markets through exporters, and the sale of red chicory continues well also with chicory in the mix. The prices are between 4 and 4.50 euros," concludes Sjan.
