"Australian green asparagus export to China entering peak season"

“As opposed to the months when local asparagus floods into the Chinese market, during the period between September and December, most of the supplies come from a few production areas in China, and the rest is imported. Currently, the season of open-field products is finished, and the greenhouse season in Shanghai has also come to a close. In terms of varieties, products on the market are mainly greenhouse green asparagus from Yunnan and Fujian and imported ones from Australia,” said Mr. Liu of Jiangsu Xuanrui Ecological Science and Technology Agriculture Co. Ltd.

“It is expected that greenhouse green asparagus grown in Yunnan and Fujian will be supplied through to February next year, and then greenhouse products from Shanghai will take over. In production areas in China, green asparagus comes mainly from Shanghai, followed by Jiangsu, Shandong, and Henan. During the winter season, prices are higher due to lower supplies. The current market prices of locally grown green asparagus are about 36 yuan per kilogram. Of course, products of different sizes are sold at varying prices in different sales areas. The asparagus is divided into three sizes: large, medium, and small. In general, the thicker the spear, the higher the price."

“As a supplement to the limited supply of locally grown green asparagus, we import from Australia during their peak production season. These are mainly sold to wholesale markets in Beijing, Guangdong, and other areas in China. Currently, Australian green asparagus is sold in China for about 50 yuan per kilogram, which is high compared with locally grown products, but they are still very popular in China. This is mainly due to two reasons. First of all, compared with locally grown products, green asparagus from Australia contains bigger edible parts. Secondly, the imported products are grown in accordance with the international standard of 26.5 cm, while those grown in Yunnan are grown to 35 cm."

Asparagus grown in China

“Our green asparagus farm is located in Jiangsu, with a planted area of around 1,500 mu and a daily supply capacity of no less than 10 tons. Over recent years, the amount of Chinese asparagus exported to Europe has been increasing, but these are mostly comprised of frozen and canned products. This is mainly due to the high export cost of fresh asparagus by air freight. We have started to export fresh green asparagus to Japan, and are actively looking for European buyers who would like to purchase no less than 500 kilos each time. The best export period for fresh green asparagus is from March to July because they taste the best in the spring and grow a lot tougher in the summer.”
