"This is the time of year when Chinese watermelons enter the off-season. Most of the watermelons currently for sale come from production areas in Myanmar. The domestic watermelon varieties still for sale are mainly the Sweet King watermelon and the Unicorn watermelon from Yunnan.
The market conditions this season were quite diverse for different watermelon varieties. The Sweet King watermelon variety was quite popular across the country. Unicorn watermelons sold well in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Beijing. At the same time, our golden honey melon was quite popular as well." This is according to Fan Shumin of Favorable Geography Specialized Fruit and Vegetable Cooperation.

"Watermelon farms in Jilin suffered from frequent rainfall in August. In addition, watermelons from farms in Ningxia entered the market in large volumes at the same time. Farmers and traders found it difficult to earn money under these circumstances. However, considering the general slump in the Chinese fruit market this year, the price of watermelons was still alright."

"Production areas in Myanmar and Laos currently supply the Chinese market with large volumes of bananas. However, large differences in weather conditions, as well as plantation technology and marketing strategies, result in different degrees of product quality. In the end, the import of bananas does not offer any real competition to Chinese melons."
