Nearly 200,000 boxes of bananas produced in Uraba, equivalent to almost 4,000 tons, have reached Algeria after the Governments of Colombia and Algeria signed an agreement authorizing Colombian banana exports to the African country.
Diego Felipe Cadena Montenegro, the Colombian ambassador in Algeria invited this country's businessmen to visit Colombia and its banana plantations to learn first-hand about the quality of the fruit. The deal that brought the first cargo to port was achieved without intermediaries. In total, 3.5 million boxes of bananas will be transported, in a business of around 55 million dollars.
Next year, Colombia is expected to send 14 to 17 ships with bananas to Africa.
Algerians have demanded more fruit, so the government is looking to grow production and generate more employment in order to meet the orders of 2021.
