Bandirma, Balikesir, a city located in northwestern Turkey, started to harvest leeks in an area of 200 hectares. The expected yield for this season is 14.000 tons. Farmers eye both the domestic and foreign markets to sell their products.
SS Yenice Development Cooperative's Chairman, Ibrahim Okyay said that they have had a good harvest this year. "For many years now, we export our products to the Netherlands and Belgium. First we send them to factories for quick freezing. Then these factories export our products. Usually we would collect 5 to 6 tons of leeks per 0,1 hectare, this year we hope this to increase up to 7 tons. We expect that the demand for leeks will further increase as the weather gets cold." said Okyay.
Nihal Bereket, farmer, said that they work from 08:00 to 18:00 to harvest leeks. "We make 150 to 200 bundles of leeks a day. This year the quality is good. We're happy that we can contribute to our family budget." said farmer Sabriye Aslan.
