Celery, watermelon and broccoli see great growth in sales

The Q3 2019 issue of United Fresh’s FreshFacts® on Retail is now available to download from the publications library of the United Fresh website. This quarterly report measures retail price and sales trends for the top 10 fruit and vegetable commodities, as well as value-added, organic and other produce categories.

Q3 report highlights include:

  • Lettuce, avocados, onions and raspberries posted the fastest dollar growth, while falling prices contributed to double digit volume growth in lemons, mandarins and oranges.
  • Value-added vegetables continued the growth momentum, bolstered by strong gains in both fruits and vegetables. Celery, watermelons and broccoli, catering to consumer needs for both wellness and convenience, saw the greatest growth in this category.
  • A variety of fruits and vegetables continue to influence overall organic growth and present opportunities to innovate and attract health conscious consumers.

This quarter’s report features category deep dives on carrots, cauliflower and oranges, with a comparison of Q1 2019 vs. Q1 2018 results to help companies plan for a successful Q1 2020. In addition, a new component of the report compares the performance of the past eight quarters for greater context of performance for spotlight categories. This enhancement was recommended by United Fresh’s Retail-Foodservice Board.

The report closes detailing research rising trends in sustainability.  “Consumers are increasingly putting a premium on products and companies that align themselves with sustainability and social responsibility,” said Miriam Wolk, United Fresh’s Vice President, Member Services. “Produce companies should monitor trends in product claims and CPG sales and think about how to apply these concepts to their own product lines.”

As an added value, the United Fresh Retail-Foodservice Board and Nielsen Fresh will host a webinar to highlight statistics included in the Q3 2019 report. Featuring analysis from Matt Lally, Associate Director, Nielsen Fresh, the webinar will occur Thursday, November 7 at 2:00 EST, providing an opportunity for participants to ask questions and gain a broader understanding of what may be driving current trends. Registration for the webinar is available here. The webinar will be moderated by Jeff Cady, Director of Produce and Floral at Tops Friendly Markets and United Fresh Retail-Foodservice Board Chairman.

The FreshFacts® on Retail report is produced in partnership with Nielsen Fresh, with direction from the United Fresh Retail-Foodservice Board. The report is sponsored by Del Monte Fresh Produce.
