China: Apple prices fall by 40% in Gansu as production volume grows

The harvest season of red Fuji apples in Gansu Province begins every year in October and continues until the beginning of November. The season already entered the final stage this year. Manager Liu Yibing of Gansu Yibing E-commerce Development Co., Ltd. talked about the production and retail conditions this year.

"The weather conditions in Gansu production areas were regular this year. The apples received plenty of sunshine and rain. The apple production volume is around 15%-20% larger than last year. The size, color, and sweetness of the apples is also ideal. The price, however, dropped because the supply volume expanded. The current purchase price of top-quality 80# apples is around 3.8-4.5 yuan [0.54-0.64 USD] per 0.5 kg, which is 1.5-2 yuan [0.21-0.28 USD] per 0.5 kg less than around this time last year," explained manager Liu.

"Our overall supply volume is around 1 million tons this season. We've already sold around 100 thousand tons so far. We are currently entering our apples into refrigerated storage to keep them fresh. The next peak of our retail season will be around the Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020]."

Yibing E-commerce Development mainly sells fruit in domestic wholesale markets and supermarket chains. "The volume we sell online grows bigger every year. However, online sales are mainly to individual consumers. We hope to scale up these sales. We also export our apples, mainly to Saudi Arabia and Russia. Apples from Gansu have a great reputation in the international apple market. Overseas buyers in particular prefer apples from Jinning and Qinyang in Gansu. Some overseas buyers pay particular attention to certificates for organic plantation. Domestic buyers usually pay more attention to product quality and price."

Yibing E-commerce Development has apple orchards that cover an area of 67 hectares. In addition to apples, the company also produces colorful potatoes. When asked about the future of Yibing E-commerce Development, manager Liu explained, "We are currently applying for organic certification. In the future we hope to develop our export market and bring the characteristic products of Gansu to even more overseas consumers."
