New recyclable packaging solution for kiwifruit

The organic sector is always looking for solutions that best represent its values, such as for example sustainability, and finding suitable packaging solutions can be a challenge.

"We always try to do our best to reach our objective - i.e. becoming more and more sustainable. This year, we chose Fruit Attraction to showcase our new packaging made of recyclable paper and cellulose hydrate," explained Philipp Breitenberger, sales manager of the Sapori di Marca cooperative. It was set up in 2015 and is the sole licencee of the Italian organic kiwifruit brand Kiwiny.

Philipp Breitenberger and Argentinian partner Ignacio Rios.

"Policart's paper pack is biodegradable in a marine environment and replaces plastic flowpacks. By industrializing the production process with Ulma machines, only the packaging material is replaced: cardboard trays for 500 grams and a biodegradable cellulose cover. "As we work in the organic sector, we must find eco-friendly solutions. I do not know whether this is the ultimate solution, but it is indeed recyclable and with zero residue."

"Fruit Attraction was perfect to showcase this packaging and feedback was positive. Our international buyers from Germany, Belgium, France, Spain and Asia require plastic-free packaging."

As regards the 2019 kiwifruit season, Philipp stated that "we will start over the next few days. Quantities are lower than last year due to blossoming and pollination problems. Fruits have uneven grades and are mainly medium-small."

"Our usual markets will mostly receive medium grades, those requiring larger ones will have to deal with uneven fruits and smaller grades."
