Miguel Gonzalez about MG Fruit's first 5 years:

"You need guts to limit your range and outsource logistics, but it works"

Dutch fruit and vegetable wholesale company, MG Fruit, recently turned five. This company was set up by Maaike and Miguel Gonzalez. Before starting their own business, they had been active in the Dutch fruit and vegetable trade sector for more than 30 years.

"In the past, many wholesalers offered in the total package. However, nowadays, I believe in having a more limited, focused assortment. You will be known to clients for this," says Miguel.

"The beauty of MG Fruit's concept lies in specialization. This idea has been proven over the past five years. But it does take courage to make certain choices."

Melons, watermelons, pineapples, citrus, and grapes - these are what MG Fruit wants to be known for. "We supplement these with Spanish products. This is thanks to my many years of business partnerships. The products mentioned are, however, our year-round core business," adds Miguel.

This importer has several important source areas. They are Central and South America, Morocco, and Spain. Their client base is made up of domestic and overseas wholesalers. They also supply supermarkets throughout Europe.

Miguel used to have an entire building at his disposal. Now he outsources his whole logistics operations to Kivits-Goes. He rents the office space he needs from this service provider. "Fruit and vegetable trade margins are not a big as they used to be."

"Before, traders could afford to have a large building. But, in times like these, you have to keep a close eye on your costs. I also think specialized companies are in a better position to offer you the correct logistical service," continues the trader.

"We are particularly pleased with this partnership. We can focus on what we are good at - importing and selling a limited range of fixed brands of fruit. Our clients can identify with these."

The MG Fruit team has since grown to six people. "Five youngsters, and me, as the senior citizen," laughs Miguel. "I am extremely proud of my team. I hope to be able to share my experiences with them for a long time to come. I have always enjoyed teaching young people."

"I consider myself lucky to be able to pass on my knowledge on to a new generation. As long as I have the strength and the team and I find I still add value to the company, I will remain involved in the business. I can last for another 20 years," he concludes.
