Cucumber prices have been rising over the past 2 weeks. This is mainly due to the fact that open-field have cucumbers have started to leave the market after recent temperature drops and will be gone by this week, while greenhouse cucumbers have not yet reached good volumes, so the supply is tight in the short run.
Cucumbers currently available are mainly from Shandong, including Weifang and Liaocheng in Shandong. There is also a small volume from Hebei, mainly from Qingxian, Cangzhou, and Gu’an, Langfang. Supplies fetching the biggest sales in the market are from Shandong.
The main supplier for the Beijing market during the winter and spring months is Lingyuan in Chaoyang, Liaoning province, supplemented by supplies from Shandong, and to a lesser extent Hebei. Volumes supplied during these months from Lingyuan are all grown in the greenhouse. They usually reach adequate volumes around mid-November and can be supplied through to May and June next year.
In conclusion, the main reason for the recent rise in cucumber prices is that after temperatures dropped, open-field cucumbers left the market while greenhouse cucumbers have not yet reached good volumes. In about half a month, cucumbers from Lingyuan, Liaoning are expected to flood into the market. By then, the supply will have been significantly strengthened, and prices are expected to fall back to some extent.
