Since 1 October, the new JASA packaging line has been running at Nedato in Oud-Beijerland, The Netherlands. The company is adding the new packaging machine to the current machine line in response to the demand for smaller packaging from the retail market. "Demand is changing. Customers want smaller packaging units and sustainable packaging for instance for cane sugar or use of paper packaging. We want to make this possible with the new packaging machine," says Nedato.
Colomba potatoes in Doypack
The proportion of small packages (<2 kg) is increasing both at home and abroad. The packaging unit <1 kg is one of the few types of packaging that is growing. These smaller packages are especially popular with single-person households, but also with young families. To meet market demand, Nedato has invested in a new, vertical, user-friendly JASA machine. According to Nedato, this machine can also be used for the latest developments in the field of packaging.
"Consumers want less plastic packaging and are looking for alternatives. With the new JASA machine it is possible to pack in foil for cane sugar and paper packaging, without a plastic coating. The investment fits in with our growth strategy."
Nedato has chosen to package the current range of potatoes in the Doypack, an upright package. For that reason, it is now possible to pack larger potatoes. According to the company, this was one of the customer's wishes. The foil that is used, is foil with a light colouring to prevent greening and germination. The packaging is sealed airtight to increase the shelf life and thus prevents food wastage. The packaging can be disposed of with the plastic waste and is recyclable. With this new packaging machine, Nedato wants to take a step towards making it's packaged products even more sustainable.
