Iceberg is one of the most popular lettuces in Switzerland. Every fourth head of lettuce is pre-cut and sold ready packed. In the last twelve months, 2,359 tonnes of pre-cut iceberg lettuce were sold (organic + conventional), according to the Federal Office for Agriculture (BLW) in a market study.
This is less than in the two previous years, in each of which around 5% more sliced iceberg lettuce was sold. The slightly declining sales trend is similar to that of uncut iceberg lettuce, the BLW writes.
Conventional production far ahead
Most of the iceberg lettuces available for consumption came from conventional production (98%). In the organic segment, pre-cut iceberg accounts for only 6% of total iceberg sales.During the last three years, it was always in May when pre-cut iceberg had the highest market share in overall iceberg sales. In that month, typically 28% of the iceberg sale volumes were pre-cut. Seasonal fluctuations were generally less pronounced for pre-cut iceberg than for uncut iceberg. Moreover, their prices remain much more stable than for uncut iceberg lettuce, the BLW says.
