This year, Les Vergers de la Blottière celebrates 5 years on the market for the Sweet Sensation pear, originally from the Netherlands, whose harvest in Maine-et-Loire started a few weeks ago.
“The first departures to our clients took place on October 2nd. We harvested a little more than 700 tons this year for 40 hectares, keeping in mind that the production will increase with time as the orchards are relatively young. For this 5-year anniversary, we are updating the graphics around the Sweet Sensation, mainly by changing to packagings with more authenticity and character, representative of this pear,” explains Camille Marques, marketing manager at Les Vergers de la Blottière.
A harvest of good quality, from 100% eco-responsible orchards
“In terms of quality, we’ve had a good harvest, with slightly smaller calibers compared to last year, because of the heatwaves this summer. And the novelty is that, from this year, we will market the French Sweet Sensation pear from 100% eco-responsible orchards. This makes the Sweet Sensation the only variety of French pears from 100% eco-responsible orchards,” explains Camille.
A growing production
Les Vergers de la Blottière is license holder for the Sweet Sensation pear in France. It has the exclusivity of its production and marketing. The company intends to develop the production. “Today, the variety has only been planted in the Loire Valley so we want to develop it in France, including in the Southwest where tests are currently carried out.”
Sweet Sensation: available from October to July
The company has been marketing the Sweet Sensation pear since 2014, mostly in France from October to July. From October until March, we will offer the Sweet Sensation from France, and we will continue off-season with our Sweet Sensation orchards in Chile, in order to extend its availability to the maximum for the consumer.”
A pear which appeals to the experts
“The Sweet Sensation has a pinkish color, which is relatively atypical for a pear. It also has the particularity of keeping its flavors with very developed aromas whether it is consumed firm and crisp or ripe and smelting. The pear appeals very much to the experts,” concludes Camille.
