USDA national retail report:

"Significant increase in prices for black seedless grapes, blackberries, and strawberries"

Late season peaches, strawberries, and raspberries were well-advertised this week, along with clementines, avocados, and tangerines. Specialty grapes provided a fun twist to the usual offerings. Winter squashes were leaders in the vegetable ads, followed closely by potatoes and tomatoes on the vine. Salad, bell peppers, onions, broccoli, and mushrooms were other popular items.

Total ad numbers this week were 378,019, a 2% decrease from last week’s 386,017. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 192,642 (51% of all ads), onions and potatoes 27,499 (7%), vegetables 149,706 (40%), herbs 1,068, and ornamentals 7,104. The number of ads for organic produce was 44,049, 12% of total ads.

The report shows the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit items this week included black seedless grapes at 13%, blackberries at 11%, and strawberries at 11%. Significant decreases included only organic blueberries at 14%. There were no significant increases for onions and potatoes. Significant decreases included only yellow potatoes at 27%. There were no significant changes for vegetables this week.
