Italy: Potatoes of all types currently available on the market

On 3rd October 2019, potato prices at the Padua market hovered between €0.28 and €0.90. Similar prices were registered in other markets in northern Italy as well.

German potatoes

"German potatoes are the cheapest, there is one type in particular that sells at around €0.28-0.32. They are usually demanded by those who do not really care about origin and focus mainly on prices."

French potatoes

Italian PDO potatoes such as Primura are instead the most expensive. "But there is also a type of French red potatoes that reaches high prices, especially when it comes to small grades. Potatoes are unlike other vegetables: the smaller the grade, the higher the demand, as it means they can be cooked whole with the skin."

Selenella, the most popular in Italy

Then there are the potatoes from the Netherlands. Production is abundant and prices hover around €0.40.

Dutch potatoes

Italian Selenella are always very popular and quotations are good, especially since they are easily recognizable and therefore in demand. This is quite unique for a product that has always been considered "poor" and undifferentiated.

"It is a positive moment as prices are profitable for the entire chain. It should always be like this but unfortunately it does not happen very often."
