Peak season for Israeli fresh produce is approaching

"In just two weeks, the first citrus fruits will arrive"

The fresh supply from Israel is currently approaching its peak: The season for the dates, avocados and pomegranates is gradually approaching, and the last Israeli mangoes are still available. In addition, the citrus fruit will soon be starting, explains Raimund Dieterich, owner of the company Israel Spezialitäten. He deals with the fruit specialties themselves and delivers them to consumers and restaurateurs throughout the Federal Republic. "The popularity of Israeli fruits is still increasing year by year," he said in an interview with FreshPlaza.

Citrus: Slight delay, pleasing forecasts
The campaign for citrus fruits is currently in the starting blocks, confirms Dieterich. In just under two weeks, the first shipments from local cultivation in Germany will arrive, a little later than usual. "The cold in April and May has particularly affected the flowering of some fruits, such as grapefruit." For the other citrus fruits, the weather was not so problematic. According to Dieterich, there are still big gains in the Orri-Clementines. "These are best done between January and April-May and we see that the demand is increasing year by year."

Mangos & Avocados: Slight overlap of seasons
Parallel to the start of the season in terms of citrus, the last Israeli mangos of the Keitt variety are still available on the market. Dieterich expects to complete the campaign in a few weeks' time. "The season was very good. So far, there has been a steady flow of good fruit. "The avocado is more slippery:" This is the beginning of the season with the strain Galil, an elongated Green Skin variety. The need could be a little better, but I feel that markets are still well supplied with other sources."

Pomegranates: Superfood run supposedly over

The first pomegranates of the season arrived in Germany at the beginning of September, but the most important variety, Wonderful, will still take some time to arrive. The cultivation of pomegranates has stagnated somewhat in recent years, claims Dieterich. "In my opinion, the run on pomegranate as a superfood is definitely over. The demand is very clearly still there, but not as high as a few years ago. "

Dates: Demand still rising
Despite the differentiation in the local cultivation, the date is still the queen among the Israeli fruits, Dieterich commented. The harvest is now in full swing and the proven main variety, Medjoul, has already been delivered in Germany. "There are still new customers for the dates, which are marketed to about 95 percent in organic quality. The vegan community is quite strong and therefore I do not think that the demand will drop off in the very near future. In addition, we have a growing Muslim clientele, so especially during the month of Ramadan there is a great demand for high quality dates. At those points, the goods from Israel are often preferred to the goods from Arabia, although it is the same variety."
