This year, Vitalis Organic Seeds will celebrate its 25th anniversary. In this relatively short period, the company developed from a pioneer in organic vegetable breeding to a global player in a market of 90 billion dollars per year. From 24 until 27 September, Vitalis will celebrate 25 years of passion, workmanship and growth. Wednesday, 25 September, will be the most important day of the jubilee with seminars, field demonstrations, new organic vegetable varieties and a festive dinner.
Rapidly growing organic market
Safe and healthy food is becoming more important for many people all over the world. Additionally, a growing number of people realize we have to treat our planet differently. The demand for organic products is increasing worldwide and will continue to do so.
Breeding for organic crops
"Organic farmers use growing methods that are different from those of regular farmers," says Marcel van Diemen, Manager Organic R&D at Vitalis. "The vegetable varieties we develop for them have different properties, such as extra high resistance against all kinds of diseases and pests, efficient use of nitrogen, and the capability of conquering weeds and tolerating insects. Our global organic seed production and breeding programs are therefore adjusted to organic growing methods and the consumers’ wishes, for instance with respect to flavor and shelf life. Combining all of these properties in one vegetable variety is a great challenge."
