"Market demand from Europe remains stable"

"Export market for Chinese ginger growing weaker"

The new harvest of Chinese ginger will enter the market in a few months. Ginger from storage will still be available for sales during this period, while overseas demand varies according to the specific conditions of each market. For example, the demand from Southeast Asia and China remains weak, while demand from Europe remains steady, at the same level as before.

Mr. Liu of Junan County Greenfood Co., Ltd. gave his view on current conditions in the Chinese ginger market: "This is the slow season for Chinese ginger and demand is low. The Chinese ginger market grows weaker as traders with storage have no opportunity to make a profit and they are therefore not eager to sell their stock. On the other hand, buyers are also not eager to purchase ginger. The market therefore slows down as sellers and buyers wait and see. The current market price of Chinese ginger is around 2 yuan [0.28 USD] per 0.5 kg. That is a price increase of 10% in comparison with the same period last year."

Mr. Liu explained that Chinese market demand for ginger is always low during this time of year. The market is relatively quiet because most people prefer to consumer ginger during the winter. This is related to practices in traditional Chinese medical science, which encourage people to eat ginger when the weather is cold because ginger helps to keep body temperature high. Now that the weather is still relatively warm, consumers are not yet ready to eat ginger.

"There are two reasons for weak market demand at the moment. First, temperatures are relatively high. Second, the ginger production season in Southeast Asian countries has already started. Their demand for Chinese ginger is therefore lower than before. In a few months they will be able to supply their own domestic markets."

"The European market demand for Chinese ginger remains stable. This is because European market demand is not sensitive to weather conditions. Furthermore, the European market is not as sensitive to price fluctuations as the Southeast Asian countries are. Therefore, overall demand from Europe remains stable and strong."

"The new ginger harvest will arrive on the market in approximately 3 months. The weather is then colder and market demand reaches a peak. Everybody awaits the new production season in the hope that the price will rise. The overall weather conditions were good this year. We hope to have a good harvest. As far as we are able to predict at this point the overall production volume will maintain the same level as last year."
