The retail season of red heart kiwi fruit from production areas in Sichuan already began more than a month ago. Manager Wang Jianlei of Chengdu Xin Chaoyang Crop Science Co., Ltd. gave his view on the kiwi fruit market in China.
"The overall market price of red heart kiwi fruit is quite stable and the overseas price is similar to last year, however, the price of pre-orders is quite high. This means that supply is not as swift as last year. The purchase price in production areas is around 0.9-1 USD per 0.5 kg. The market for yellow heart kiwi fruit was depressed last year and many farmers switched to the production of red heart kiwi fruit. The overall surface area devoted to plantation of red heart kiwi fruit in Sichuan rapidly expanded this year. However, low temperatures this year reduced the ratio of pollinated flowers in kiwi fruit orchards. Furthermore, some of the fruit dropped. The production volume per hectare was therefore lower than last year. As for product quality, some of the fruit was unsuitable for storage."
"The red heart kiwi fruit is hairless, has thin skin and rich fruit flesh. The flavor is pure and sweet. However, the shelf life of red heart kiwi fruit is relatively short with only around three months on average. Furthermore, the red heart kiwi fruit requires high standards in refrigerated storage and distribution. Exporters are required to implement strict post-harvest management in order to guarantee flavor and freshness. The kiwi fruit is selected by hand and the temperature is kept stable during transport." Manager Wang further explained that, "Chinese kiwi fruit is exported to a greater number of more distant overseas markets as the product varieties improve and refrigeration technology becomes more powerful.
We mainly export to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and North America. Our export volume grows every year. Our export volume reached around several hundred shipping containers this year. The red heart kiwi fruit is considered a high-end product in overseas markets. Our Keystory brand kiwi fruit is mainly sold in overseas, large-scale supermarket chains. We package our products based on the requirements from customers."
"The production area of Xin Chaoyang Crop Science is located in Pujiang, Sichuan. The company was established more than 30 years ago and has contributed to the improvement of kiwi fruit varieties across China, as well as organic plantation, storage period optimization, and management standardization in the kiwi fruit industry. Chinese kiwi fruit growers need to raise the level of management and improve product quality if domestic kiwi fruit will ever be able to compete with other kiwi fruit in overseas markets," concluded manager Wang.
