China: E-commerce platforms bring new opportunities for wholesalers

With the growth of Internet technology, e-commerce platforms have been becoming increasingly popular and buying fresh fruit and vegetables online is also gradually becoming a trend. Poyee, COO of FreshJN, discusses the strengths and trends of the online fresh business.

With the support of Guangzhou Jiangnan Wholesale Market, the company offers an online sales platform to many direct wholesalers and suppliers. “Currently, there are about 400 suppliers on our platform, most are traders in the Guangzhou Jiangnan Wholesale Market. More and more traders are choosing to join e-commerce platforms on top of their existing wholesale market sales channels. For some suppliers, the share of their online business accounts for more than half of their total sales. However, not all suppliers can join our platform. We conduct a strict screening on products, prices, quality, and delivery speed of the suppliers,” Poyee said.

When it comes to the strengths of e-commerce platforms, Poyee said: “From the customer's point of view, first of all, online sales reduce the distribution links. In addition to reducing costs, it ensures the transparency of operation and product quality. Secondly, diversity in fruits available gives customers a greater choice and provides buyers with one-stop shopping possibilities.

"Currently, we have more than 2,000 SKU of products available online every day. Take grapes, a product currently in season, as an example, there are dozens of varieties from different countries available, with different packaging, taste, and sizing. From the perspective of buyers, the intensive trading model reduces the distribution cost and improves the distribution speed. The efficiency of our six sorting warehouses is very high, so the customer can usually receive the goods the next day after placing an order."

FreshJN, a B2B e-commerce platform for fresh products, was officially launched in August 2017. The customer group that purchases through the platform include businesses with large demand such as fruit stores, supermarkets, secondary wholesalers, and restaurants. The volume of transactions has quadrupled in just two years. The main markets covered by the platform include Guangdong, Hunan, and Chongqing. They also plan to expand to surrounding cities of Shanghai with the backing of Shanghai Huizhan wholesale market late this year.

"In today's Internet age, there are more and more companies that offer B2B trade models, but there are only a few that can operate as a trading platform. The challenge we face is how to change the trading habits of wholesalers and make more buyers and sellers realize the strengths of e-commerce platforms," Poyee concluded.
