The fruit producers who are members of the Moldova Fruit Association have expressed their outrage about the ridiculous prices offered by the processing factories for the apples intended to produce concentrated juice. They are almost 2 times lower than those offered in Poland, Ukraine and Romania. The members of the Moldova Fruit Association have thus invited processing factories from Poland, Romania and Ukraine to negotiate the purchase of about 200 thousand tons of apples for processing.
On September 2, the Association addressed the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, the President of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Food Industry, Radu Mudreac, the Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and the Environment, Georgeta Mincu and the President of the Competition Council, Marcel Răducan.
In the letter, the producers mentioned the forecasts announced at the Prognosfruit Conference by the World Association of Apples and Pears (WAPA), where the Moldova Fruit Association is a full member. The price threshold for apples for processing in EU countries is determined by the price to be set in Poland, and in the 2019-2020 season, these prices are expected to amount to around 150 Euro / ton.
According to research conducted by the Moldova Fruit Association, on August 30, 2019 the average prices (excluding VAT) paid for apples by processing plants were as follows: Poland - 130 Euro / ton; Romania - 113 Euro / ton; Ukraine - 105 Euro / ton, and the Republic of Moldova - 65 Euro / ton. The production costs for apples in the aforementioned countries are approximately at the same level of 100-112 Euro per ton.
According to forecasts, in 2019, the Republic of Moldova expects a global production of apples of about 670 thousand tons. Due to the violent rains with hail and storms, which took a toll on the plantations in 2019, about 370 thousand tons of apples will be intended for processing.
