Spanish region of La Rioja expects to harvest 25 million kilos of pears

The pear campaign has started "quite well" in La Rioja, with fruits with good calibers, as confirmed by Sixto Cabezón, technician of the Protected Designation of Origin Peras de Rincón de Soto.

The prospect is that the 2019 pear harvest will amount to 25 million kilos, three million more than in the previous campaign. This increase is due, among other things, to the recovery of the La Rioja Baja harvest, where smaller fruits were harvested in the previous season, causing the total volume to fall.

Fortunately, the weather conditions have been ideal this time, and the absence of severe storms or strong gales has allowed the pears to grow properly. "The wind is a big enemy. Conference pears are totally pendulous, so strong winds can cause many pieces to fall to the ground," said Cabezón.

Sales prospects
The sales prospects are also looking exceptionally good. "Even if our harvest is simply normal, pear producers have suffered many issues at a European level."
