Spanish fruit and vegetable exports have reached an all-time high in the first half of 2019, growing by 4.18% compared to the same period of 2018. The 7,453,898 tons sold generated 7,816 million Euro.
With regard to vegetable exports, their value totaled 3,531 million Euro, with a growth of 10.06%. Worthy of note is the good performance of peppers, with 693 million Euro (+16.12), which made it Spain's most exported vegetable in this period. Also of lettuce, with 459 million Euro (+ 5.5%); cabbage, with 381 million Euro (+20.64%) and other vegetables in general, also considered minor crops, with 143 million Euro (+30.33%). Potatoes also stood out, with a 23% growth in terms of volume, with 155,000 tons, and 58% in terms of value, with 100 million Euro.
The value of fruit exports amounted to 4,285 million Euro, with a 0.22% decline. The most noteworthy is the good performance of berries, whose value reached a record 1,233 million Euro. Strawberries topped the ranking, with 574 million Euro (+3.58%), followed by raspberries, with 314 million Euro (+10.32%) and blueberries, with 307 million Euro (+6.23%). The growth in terms of volume of these products is higher than that of their value.
The value of fresh fruit and vegetable imports in the first half of 2019 amounted to 1,539 million Euro, with a growth of 4.76%. 517 million corresponded to vegetables (+24.5%) and 1,022 million to fruits (-3%). Potatoes have played a decisive role in the overall statistics, as their value recorded a 79% growth and amounted to 188 million Euro. The import of tomatoes, with 65 million Euro (+27%), and onions, with 26 million Euro (+32%) and 47,783 tons, has also grown strongly. Pepper imports have stabilized with 41 million Euro and a 7.5% increase in terms of volume, reaching 42,778 tons. Lastly, green beans recorded a 14% drop, with 48,548 tons.
