China: Green onions commanding good market

Currently, green onions sold on the market are mainly from Qingdao in Shandong and Tangshan in Hebei. Since May, the price of green onions has been rising. This is because green onions sold on the market from May onwards are mainly from Anqiu, Shandong, and the increase in prices seems to be cyclical compared with last year. Prices have been staying within a reasonable range.

After green onions from Qingdao Pingdu became available this month, the price dropped temporarily. This week, Qingdao was struck by Typhoon Lekima which brought heavy rainfall, causing difficulties in field management and harvest, driving farm prices up. In particular, green onions harvested after the rain are prone to rot, so the price of dry, good quality green onions is relatively high. In comparison, the proportion of crops from Shandong affected by rot this summer is lower than that of the same period last year, and the price is also slightly lower.

Autumn crops from Shandong, Hebei, and Tianjin are expected to come onto the market around the end of October. By then, prices are expected to have dropped significantly.
