Yoom, Syngenta’s new tomato brand:

“Prospects of continuing to supply throughout the year are good”

A new tomato brand has been launched: Syngenta presents Yoom. This cocktail tomato has a characteristic purple colour on the outside, while its flesh is red, bordering on orange. It’s the result of a natural selection programme of the tomato specialists of Syngenta Vegetable Seeds. Jeremie Chabanis, Syngenta Value Chain Lead: “Yoom is especially flavourful and has the right balance between sweet and sour. This ensures a long-lasting umami / savoury flavour experience.”

Because the tomato is available year-round, customers can purchase it at any desired moment. Yoom is marketed by means of expressions on packaging, in commercials, there’s a special website and activities on social media.

The Yoom was first presented at the Fruit Logistica 2019, and it immediately got attention from production markets throughout Europe, including Spain, Italy and Portugal. These countries also supply to France, the Benelux, Germany and the UK. Right now, the Yoom brand is also marketed in North America and Australasia.

Jeremie: “Various growers have produced the HN-5003 variety in tests. They were the ones to get started with it. They confirmed that the plant performs well regarding yield and shelf life of the product. The fruit’s weight is between 30 and 35 grams, with a bunch weighing around 100-120 grams. I’m convinced the market has room for the Yoom cocktail tomato because of its size, texture, crispiness and juiciness.”

Health aspect
Internal research of Syngenta shows that the anthocyanin levels in Yoom tomatoes is significantly higher than in regular tomatoes. Anthocyanin is an antioxidant. Anthocyanin supposedly has a positive influence on a number of health problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes and infections.

Yoom’s characteristic purple colour is caused by anthocyanin. As the tomato naturally ripens on the vine, it develops its deep-purple colour, firm texture and natural sugars.

After a winter production programme in Southern Europe, production is now in full swing in a number of Northern European countries, which allows for local production where possible. “Prospects to continue supplying throughout the year are good. The results in North America during spring and summer are promising for a successful commercial launch during the coming production cycle, in any case.”
