China: "Fruit and veg enter markets through more effective channels"

“Most of the fruits come into season in China in the summer. During this period, less fruit is imported, and most of the markets across China are supplied with local fruit. In addition to being marketed locally, many fruits are also exported overseas, such as pears, apples, grapes, and kiwis,” says Chen Zhiming, Managing Director of Xiamen Shanmei Fruit & Vegetables Co Ltd.

Xiamen Shanmei Fruit & Vegetables Co Ltd. exports a wide range of products. Since being established 20 years ago, the company has been actively engaged in the export of various fruits and vegetables. Products are mainly exported to Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

“Levels and speed of economic development in these markets vary. Due to import quotas, our fruit exports to Indonesia have plunged compared with previous years. Singapore is the richest country in Southeast Asia and is extremely demanding in terms of quality, but they also deliver better prices. The Philippines is undergoing fast economic development, and their import volume is gradually increasing. The Malaysian market is highly competitive because many Malaysian traders directly visit growing areas in China to purchase products."

“There are also some changes that are beneficial to us. In particular, some overseas supermarkets have made adjustments in their purchase models, from the traditional model of importing via local importers to directly importing from China. In this way, exporters in China now have more opportunities to connect directly with destination markets.”

“China grows a large number of fruit and vegetables, and we are constantly developing new varieties suitable for export. This approach is the result of pressure brought by the ever-changing market. As the consumption habits in overseas markets change, some products used to be exported are being adapted or even phased out, which will ultimately benefit the virtuous circle of the market."

“In order to communicate with new and old friends in the industry and explore business opportunities, we take part in Asia Fruit Logistica held in Hong Kong every year, and this year is no exception. We sincerely welcome customers and friends to visit our stand 5K-20L.”
