Dutch potatoes substandard - South American traders turn to China

"We have recently received a great number of orders from South American traders. In previous seasons these traders imported from the Netherlands. However, according to their feedback, the potatoes they recently imported from the Netherlands easily spoiled. The product quality is below standard. South American traders have therefore begun to turn their attention to China." This is according to Manager Zhu of Shandong YSC Import & Export Co., Ltd.

"Chinese potatoes were not able to compete with Dutch potatoes in the global market in previous years. The main reason for this situation is the absence of price superiority. However, now that the product quality of Dutch potatoes turned out quite disappointing, Chinese potatoes are able to compete on superior product quality. We expect tour potato export volume to South America to rapidly grow in the near future. However, as the export volume to South America will continue to grow and the storage volume of Chinese potatoes will decline, the export price is likely to rise. This in turn will turn away some importers from Malaysia and Thailand who can no longer afford to import potatoes from China," explained Manager Zhu.

The overall condition of the Chinese potato industry in Shandong is quite good. The weather was favorable and the production volume stable. "Although the recent typhoon Lekima had a heavy impact on the vegetable industry in Shandong, the potatoes were already harvested and stored in warehouses. The potato industry therefore did not suffer from this typhoon. The recent FOB price of Chinese potatoes is around 300 USD per ton. The price is somewhat higher than around the same period last year but still within the limits of regular fluctuations."

"We adjust our packaging sizes and methods based on the requirements of various export destinations. For example, the labor cost in such developed countries as Canada and the USA is quite high and importers in these countries require potatoes to be stacked on pallets. This makes unloading with a forklift easier. In Southeast Asia or South America, however, our clients have no particular preference for packaging methods."
