Vietnamese mango industry increases production to meet soaring demand from China

The R2E2 mango variety was introduced from Australia in 2003 to Vietnam. A few years ago, Vietnamese farmers increased their production by almost 10 times due to the soaring demand from China. Since then, the R2E2 mango has become the most popular mango variety grown in central Vietnam. The size of the R2E2 mango is generally very big, 600-900 gram/piece, some weigh more than 1kg.

According to Mr. Tran at MATS, the R2E2 mango with its small core, moderate sweetness and characteristic aroma, has become very popular among customers. One specialty about R2E2 mangoes is that they grow under hot sunny condition so their bacteria can be killed and the sunlight gives the fruits a very pretty and reddish color.

“The weather conditions in Vietnam were not perfect this year, agricultural products experienced erratic rains and sunshine. The hurricane that happened a few months ago also greatly affected local production and sales. These subsequent sales in the Vietnamese mango industry decreased by 27.8% compared to the same period in 2018.” Mr Tran from MTAS said. “So far, most of our products are exported to Hong Kong (3-4 40ft containers/month), and the remaining products are delivered to Russia (4-5 tons/month), Canada (1-2 tons/month) and the Middle East(8-10 tons/month).

Nowadays, consumers not only value the taste of the product, but also its appearance. People tend to like to buy products with various colors (red, orange, purple…) on the skin. Products are classed according to various grades based on the appearance and weight of the product. Our products have a  strong price advantage and we received great feedback from our existing markets. This year, we will start to expand into new markets such as the USA, Canada, Korea and Japan.”

The harvest season of R2E2 mangoes in Vietnam lasts quite long, from October until May. Vietnamese farmers sell the mangoes directly after harvesting. The farmers often use two types of packaging, depending on customer requests. They have packages of 5kg per box or 20kg per plastic basket.

“The best storage condition for mangoes is in an environment of 10-12 degree Celsius. So for sea transport, we have to use cooled containers to maintain product quality after 15-20 days of sea freight. At the moment, the FOB price of R2E2 mangoes is round 12.0 usd/box of 5kgs.”

MTAS is an agricultural producer and exporter, owning a 26 ha mango farm in Melkong Delta of Vietnam. Besides mangoes, the company exports and distributes domestically more than 30 kinds of exotic fruits under the brand “VAS”. The company cooperates with large chain local supermarkets such as Coop-mart, Satra and Aeon Citimart. The company will participate in the Asia Fruit Logistica in Hong Kong during 4-6 September, at Hall 3 booth number T20.

“We want to meet more importers, wholesale distributors and retailers at the exhibition.”
