First Dutch green Brussels sprouts of the season at Van Nature

This week, Eelco van Putten from Dirksland, the Netherlands, starts harvesting green Brussels sprouts. As a result, the start of the green sprouts season is similar to that of 2018. “The harvest is naturally limited this early in the season, but prospects are excellent and green sprouts are popular,” Eelco says. “Particularly in countries such as the US and the UK. Sprouts are eaten raw there as well, in a salad with cranberries and quinoa, for example. It’s a little different from a salad with cucumber, tomato and avocado.”

Van Nature has more than 270 hectares of sprouts at its disposal during the 2019/20 season, including six hectares of Kalettes, three hectares of Sweet Purple sprouts and three hectares of purple sprouts. It’s expected the Kalettes (formerly known as Flower Sprouts) can be harvested from late October. The Sweet Purple Sprout is a new sprout with a beautiful deep-purple colour and has, just like the Kalettes, a sweet, nutty flavour. Unlike the regular purple sprouts, Sweet Purple Sprouts retain their lovely purple colour during cooking. It’s expected that the Sweet Purple Sprouts can be harvested from late November.
