Innovation in an electronic trap

An innovative pheromone electronic trap to make detection more precise, memorize data and perform remote checks was presented on 25th July 2019 during the varietal comparison technical day organized by Agripat, Consorzio Patata Italiana di Qualità, Selenella, Astra and Crpv.

"Over 70 people attended despite the 38°C. Among the most innovative aspects we witnessed, there was the electronic monitoring trap," explains Riff98 technician Benedetto Accinelli.

The trap has a unique shape and boasts a camera that takes high-resolution pictures at set times. Attracted by the pheromones, the insects enter into the trap and remain blocked. The camera replaces a visit by technicians, as the picture is sent directly to a smartphone. The system is powered by a solar panel.

"It is a very useful innovation designed by Pessl Instruments. It saves time for those who should go round all traps regularly for months and months. In addition, the software recognizes the insect and memorizes images per trap, crop, insect etc. All participants manifested their interest."

Many technicians, growers and operators attended the event

Another aspect discussed was the fight against elateridae. Massimo Bariselli from the Emilia-Romagna regional phytosanitary service warned about attacks by these insects, which affect potatoes in particular. Especially since, as of next year, a few of the chemicals used to counter them may no longer be authorized.
