“Weather conditions this year have had little effect on the yields. However, the planted area of onions has decreased this year due to low prices last year, and the overall production has also declined. The price of onions this season is a bit higher compared with the same period last year, and there is still room for further increases,” said Mr. Kong, Manager at Shandong YSC Import&Export Co., Ltd. regarding the market situation of onions this year.
Shandong YSC Import&Export Co., Ltd. is located in Jining City. The company buys onions from farmers and sells them on, mainly focusing on exports. “The export performance of onions this season is relatively stable, with the main export destinations are Southeast Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America.”
“We select and grade our export onions with machines, but still do the packing manually. In addition, during the packing process, manual selection is required to pick out the defective onions, offering our customers better quality assurance for our products.” Regarding the type of packaging, Mr. Zhu said, “At the moment, our domestic customers mainly ask for small nets in different specifications such as 10kg, 5kg, and 3kg. Our onions exported to Europe are packed in trays.”
“As the export volume increases, we plan to learn from agricultural giants in the United States and Europe by introducing advanced planting techniques, large-scale planting, reduced production costs, and improved competitiveness. We are currently investigating the use of plant protection UAVs, sprays, and fertilizers.”
