Hangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market is a large-scale wholesale market, taking up 80% of the fruit wholesale market in Hangzhou. In June, the volume of watermelons traded offline reached 13,889 tons, an average of 463 tons per day, with an average month-on-month growth rate of 15.5%, according to Lu Chaofa, a market consultant at the market. Since the beginning of July, the daily trading volume has reached over 400 tons. With large volumes of watermelons from other regions in China, such as Northeast China and Ningxia, still to come, the sales of watermelons in Hangzhou are expected to show strong growth.
At the beginning of July, the average wholesale price of watermelons is comparable to that in June, at 3.3 yuan/kg, up 17.9% year-on-year. There are two main reasons for this. First of all, Hangzhou has more rainfall this summer, resulting in the production of many seasonal fruit to drop, driving prices up. Secondly, thanks to the fast development in agricultural science and technologies, the quality of fruit that consumers love gradually improved, resulting in prices that are higher than in previous years.
