Price of Yulin lychees continues to rise due to off year

"Lychee Hometown" Beiliu has entered the peak lychee sales season, but this year's lychees are not cheap. It is reported that due to weather conditions and other factors, this year's Beiliu lychees are in an “off year”. As a result, the production has declined, and the price has risen. In addition, the situation cannot be more different between the purchasing business and retailing at the place of origin. Compared with the boom in lychee purchasing of previous years, this year’s purchasing business seems very quiet, though the retail stalls set up by farmers alongside the road are very busy.

According to a purchaser, the price of lychees this year is higher than in previous years, and the quality of the fruit mostly isn’t ideal. The volume of purchase has dropped significantly compared with previous years. At the same time, as this year is an “off year" of lychees according to the farmers, quality fruit is even harder to find. Therefore, the price of lychees is rising day by day. For example, the price of Xinfeng Black Leaf gradually increased from 10 yuan per kilo to 18 yuan per kilo, and Guiwei is sold at 60 to 70 yuan per kilo.

What has caused the price of lychees to remain so high? Yang Jishan from Beiliu City Fruit Bureau said that the low yield of lychees this year is the main reason. As the rain made a lot of lychee flowers fall, resulting in less fruit set, the production of lychees is affected. Moreover, this year is an “off year" for lychee production. The price of lychee has soared since they came onto the market. At the moment, with the end of harvest season approaching, most of the lychees have been harvested, and the market demand remains strong, which leads to high lychee prices.
