"Prices of imported bananas rise in China"

Currently, the Chinese banana market is very active. The local banana season is underway, and large volumes of bananas from other countries, such as the Philippines and Ecuador, are also being marketed batch after batch. It has been reported that the volume of imported bananas has increased significantly in the past few weeks. “The volume of banana imports this year has indeed increased a lot compared to last year. I believe this may be due to the fact that the quality and taste of imported bananas are good. For example, the Philippines can supply consistent and high-quality bananas throughout the year, and these bananas better meet the needs of Chinese consumers for high-quality fruit. This may be the reason why banana imports this year have increased compared with other years." Mr. Hu, a banana grower and retailer shared.

As Mr. Hu explained, local banana production in China is currently in the off-season and the total supply is limited. “At the moment, I only supply bananas from Hainan. Last month, the price of local bananas dropped slightly. On the other hand, the price of imported bananas fluctuates frequently. In weeks 22 and 23, the price of imported bananas dipped sharply but started to pick up in week 24 and 25. After that, the price of imported bananas has risen again and is currently at a high level. The reasons for this come-back in prices is still unclear. I suspect that it may have something to do with the price of origin in the Philippines."
