The import of New Zealand onions is as good as done at Mulder Onions. "We are looking back at a good season. The prices have been very stable. The demand was good and this meant the volumes were flowing. It was an easy trade at the end of the day," says Gerard Hoekman.
The volume of import onions is now mainly Egyptian. "This market is heavily over saturated, particularly with yellow onions. Too many people have seen a profit in this import due to the high price level. This caused the prices to drop considerably."
The new Dutch season is having a difficult start. "The large supply of Egyptian onions is pressuring the market. The prices are plummeting quickly, and this means customers are reserved, as what they buy for today could be expensive tomorrow," according to Gerard. The declining market is no surprise to him. "You know that when you come from a high level, the market will quickly be under pressure."
"We have to wait and see how the market will develop further. If everything continues to grow we will have a world full of onions and it will be hard for little profit. But at the moment it isn't raining and if this dry period lasts too long, this will also influence the yields. All in all a lower yield with this area might not be too bad," concludes Gerard.
