"Chinese mandarin export performance of 2019 expected to improve"

“The Nanfeng mandarin is a low-cost, export-friendly fruit,” said Mr. Hu, Manager at Jiangxi Luyuan Fruits Co., Ltd. in Nanfeng City. “It is a low-end fruit in China because there are better mandarins on the market for consumers to choose from. Most of our products are for export, and we even sell the mandarins we produce to countries like Malaysia, India, Bangladesh, Dubai, and Canada. They are very popular in the export market."

"In 2019, the production of Nanfeng mandarins dropped sharply, and the market price is expected to stay at around 2.4-3.0 yuan/kg,” shared Mr. Hu, “The export performance of Nanfeng mandarins is mainly affected by weather conditions. In recent years, export performance has not been satisfactory. The dry weather in 2017 resulted in the sizes of mandarins to be small, reducing the demand from foreign countries. In 2018, there was overly abundant rainfall, resulting in the mandarins to rot easily, and the exporters didn’t dare to export them. The exporters suffered from heavy losses from this, and the price of Nanfeng mandarins also fell to the lowest point in history, at only 1.0 yuan/kg at its lowest. The export performance in the 2019 season is expected to improved compared with 2018, but it still depends on the weather in the second half of the year. If there is still a lot of rain, it could still be the same as last year, forcing exporters not dare to export. ”

"In addition to weather conditions, there are now more varieties and larger volumes of fruit available globally, and consumers can also enjoy local fruit. This is one of the reasons why the trade of mandarins has been hindered in recent years," said Mr. Hu. “Our company has been specialized in exporting mandarins for 7 years, so we are very experienced in such a situation and we are prepared.”
