China: Xiaotai mango prices falling

This week, the price of Xiaotai mangoes at the Wanbang Market has been dropping. This is mainly due to a few factors.

First of all, the production area and volume are both very large this year. Currently, supplies of Xiaotai mangoes in the Wanbang Market mainly come from Guangxi, Yunnan, and Hainan, whose production volumes are very large, especially Guangxi, whose production volume has increased greatly and fruit quality is good. Large sales volumes and low purchasing costs are also reasons for the current low price of Xiaotai mangoes.

Furthermore, there are now more varieties of mangoes on the market, intensifying the competition. Mango varieties available on the market at the moment include Australian mangoes, Apple mangoes, Guifei mangoes, Green mangoes, Shuixian mangoes, and Ivory mangoes. The large number of available varieties and supplies have suppressed the rise in mango prices. Compared with other varieties, the price of Xiaotai mangoes shows a downward trend.

Moreover, as the temperature increases, the growth cycles of fruits such as watermelons, melons, grapes have shortened. These fruits are now commanding high sales volumes thanks to their sweet taste and thirst quenching abilities, and are also sold at low prices. This has also had a certain impact on the sales and pricing of Xiaotai mangoes.

The post-ripening cycle of mangoes is about 4-5 days. According to traders, ripened mangoes can only be stored for about one day. Affected by the large supplies of fresh mangoes, farmers are eager to sell their stocks, causing mango prices to continue to decline.

It is expected that when the weather cools as August begins and watermelons, honeydew melons, melons, and grapes gradually leave the market, the price of Xiaotai mangoes will gradually go back to normal. After entering September, mango production areas will gradually switch from Guangxi to Sichuan and Hainan. As the transportation costs and purchasing costs increase, the price of Xiaotai mangoes will rise to a higher level.
